Spelling 2nd Six Weeks

 

This six weeks in spelling, we will be learning and applying spelling rules.  These rules involve singular and plural nouns, as well as, present and past tense verbs.

 

 

Spelling Plural Nouns

 

1.  Add -s to form the plural of most nouns. 

2.  Add -es to form the plural of nouns ending in s, x, ch, or sh.

3.  If a noun ends in a consonant + y, change the y to i and add -es.

4.  If a noun ends in a vowel + y, just add -s.

5.  Most singular nouns ending in -f or -fe, change the -f to -v and add -es.

6.  Words ending in a consonant + o, add -es to form the plural.

7.  Irregular nouns - Some singular nouns are made plural by spelling changes or by adding a syllable. Other nouns have the same singular and plural form.

 

Spelling Verbs:

 

Present Tense

A present-tense verb must agree with the subject noun of a sentence.

1.  Add s to most verbs if the subject is singular.

2.  Add es to verbs that end in s, ch, sh, x, or z.

3.  Do NOT add s or es if the subject is plural or if it is I or you.

 

Present Tense or Past Tense

The spelling of some verbs change when es or ed is added.

1.  For verbs ending in a consonant and y change the y to i and add -es or -ed. Try = tried  or tries

2.  For one-syllable verbs ending in one vowel and one consonant, double the final consonant be fore adding -ed. Stop=stopped      hop=hopping

3.  For verbs ending in e, drop the e before adding -ed.
