First Grade studied the anatomy of a pumpkin. We learned about how a pumpkin grows and the different parts of a pumpkin: stem and leaves, blossom end, tendril, skin, pumpkin shell, pulp, cavity, seeds, seed coat, nut, ribs and fibrous strands. We cut a pumpkin open and looked at the inside. We talked about the different uses of the pulp and seeds.

In art we dyed shell macaroni an orange color and decorated pumpkin cut outs and made torn paper pumpkins.

We made construction paper pumpkins and put pumpkin seeds and tissue papaer strands on them to represent the fibrous strands and seeds on the inside of a pumpkin.

To end our study on pumpkins, we watched Charlie Brown's "The Great Pumpkin" movie and decorated cookies like pumpkins.

We obtained most of our information about pumpkins on the internet, and we read the book, "The Bumpy Little Pumpkin".
