Being from a farming community, agriculture is of great interest to our class. Many of our students' parents make their living from farming, so this brought many ideas into our classroom. Our class chose to study about the dairy industry. Since the dairy industry is a new growing business to our area, this created much interest. From taking field trips to a dairy, reading about certain breeds of cows, making treats from dairy products (this was a cold experience), having a mobile dairy unit visit our school, and a wonderful interview with a man from this community that grew up on a dairy. The third grade class has become very proficient in learning about mixing feed, sanitation, tasting the products, and the pros and cons of running a dairy. If you need to know anything about any of these topics--just ask us!
