Kori, Matthew, and Brooke competed in the spelling and vocabulary district contest Petersburg on Tuesday, March 28, 2000.

Contestants were required to take all three parts of the test or be disqualified. Part I was a written vocabulary and proofreading section and a total of 15 minutes was allotted. Parts II and III consisted of words pronounced for the contestants. Part II consisted of 70 words that were graded. Part III consisted of 20 words that were only to be graded if a tie should occur.
